Transformers Animated - Voyager Optimus Prime

Managed to snag myself a pretty cheap Voyager Optimus Prime in loose, complete condition. In the Transformers Animated lineup, Optimus Prime is available in several versions, the Deluxe Cybertronian form, the 2 pack Battle Damaged Optimus Prime and Cybertronian form Megatron, Voyager Optimus Prime, Supreme Roll-out Prime and the various other classes like the Legends class and the Action Battlers class.

As with all other Voyager class figures, Optimus Prime comes packaged in a box. As I got this piece loose, I do not have any photos of the packaged figure in hand.

Vehicle Mode

In vehicle mode, Optimus Prime closely resembles his cartoon counterpart. The wheels are made of plastic and are fully rotatable. The blue sirens at the top are of a translucent plastic. The windscreens are also made of the same translucent blue plastic. At the bottom of the windscreen, several silver details can be seen from underneath the windscreen. A pretty nice touch to the entire figure.

The accessories that come with Optimus Prime can be attached to the back of the cab in vehicle mode. This appearance is similar to how Optimus Prime appeared in one of the episodes in Transformers Animated.

Robot Mode

The robot mode also closely resembles the cartoon counterpart. The transformation is pretty simple though the part where one has to let the legs swing to the bottom does not really work out that well for my piece.

Articulation wise, Optimus Prime has articulation in most of the major joints.

  • The head rotates fully
  • The shoulders are fully rotatable and can swing out
  • The elbows bend at right angles and can also be rotated fully
  • The waist rotates fully
  • The hip joints are also rotatable to a certain extent and can also swing out
  • The knees bend at almost right angles and can be rotated fully
  • The ankles can be pointed down

Gimmicks & Accessories

Optimus Prime features a battle mask gimmick as can be seen by the 2 photos above. Personally, I prefer to leave the mask on as it makes Prime look more like Prime should. Never really understood the need for Prime to have a mouth. To activate the gimmick, all one has to do is to either lift or depress a tab at the back of the head to lift up or push down the mask.

Accessories wise, Optimus Prime comes packaged with a gun and an axe. The gun has a gimmick where one can load water into it and then squirt out the water by pushing in the gun barrel. The gun can be attached to the circular hole in the middle of the axe for use of storage in vehicle mode.

As for the axe, I must say that I am pretty disappointed with the axe. In fact, most of the axes that come packaged with all the other versions of Prime also can’t quite make the cut. They’re mostly cartoon inaccurate. The packaged axe unfolds to form a double bladed axe which seems a tad too big.

The axe also has a gimmick, well, I don’t really know how to classify it as such. It can be attached to the back of Prime and becomes like a jet pack for a flight mode of sorts.

All in all, a pretty good figure to have for a cartoon accurate version of TFA Optimus Prime, though the axe could probably use a more show accurate mould.
