Transformers Animated - Voyager Blitzwing
Blitzwing is available in the Transformers: Animated line as a Voyager Class figure. As expected of Blitzwing, this incarnation is also a triple changer as a homage to the G1 incarnation.
Vehicle mode
As a triple changer, Blitzwing has 3 modes, the tank mode, the plane mode and his robot mode. I’ll feature the 2 vehicle modes here.
In tank mode, Blitzwing resembles a double barrelled tank complete with fully rotatable turret. There are 4 wheels at the threads so Blitzwing can roll along a horizontal surface or inclines for that matter. The cannons can also flip to the sides and to the rear thanks to a joint that connects the main turret to the cannons. The cannons can be popped out due to rough play but can be easily reattached. This is the most compact out of all 3 forms as in this mode, Blitzwing is more like a block.
The transformation from tank to plane mode is pretty simple and involves moving a few parts. The cockpit swings out from the bottom and the tank canopy is straightened and split to form the wings. The tank turret is then moved to the rear to form the tail fins and the jet thrusters. The threads remain as they are. I’m guessing that this mode was probably of a lower priority than the tank mode as although it looks like a fighter jet, the tank threads kind of spoil the whole fighter jet look. Which real life airplane in this world actually has tank threads in it’s design? Apparently, Blitzwing is a visionary in this department, maybe, just maybe we’ll see designers favouring caterpillar threads over wheels in future design.
Lastly, a little something for all the Macross fans out there.
Robot Mode
Blitzwing’s robot mode is very similar to the cartoon series counterpart. As part of this likeliness, the robot mode even features the 3 faces that Blitzwing has for his 3 split personalities.
The helmet of Blitzwing is made of a softer plastic compared to the rest of the figure. At the back of the helmet is a dial that when turned, causes the faces to spin and change. In my opinion, they could have made the dial a little bit larger. The helmet is also made of a much softer plastic than the rest of the figure, so soft that I actually managed to ‘enlarge’ the opening that houses the dial for the face changing gimmick with just my fingernail only. Another thing is that the gimmick does not work that well, most of the time, when i rotate the dial, not only does the faces change, the helmet turns along with the faces as well.
Accessory wise, Blitzwing comes with 2 clear orange projectiles. These are pretty well shaped as they look pretty much like the flames shooting out of the jet thrusters in plane mode and the ‘lasers’ firing from the turret in tank mode.
There are purple buttons on the forearms which do absolutely nothing at all even though the buttons can be depressed. The hands are in a perpetually open state and do not feature any finger articulations at all. The back cannons unfortunately, are not able to be placed next to the head in a ‘firing’ position as per the animated series, which is quite a downer.
Articulation wise, most of the major joints are articulated. The head turns fully, the shoulders rotate fully, the hip features ball joints, the knees bend, the elbows are double jointed and can be rotated at the shoulder and the wrists can be bent at right angles. However, some of the arm articulation is hindered by the wing attachments. The following pictures show the possible poses Blitwing can acheive with his articulation.
